National Volunteer Month: The Power of Showing Up
“Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve.” — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
On Atlanta’s historic Westside, progress is built neighbor by neighbor. It happens when residents, partners, and volunteers invest their time and care in the places and people they call home.
National Volunteer Month is a chance to recognize the people who keep that work moving — the ones who show up on Saturdays, return season after season, and help make the Westside’s continued growth a community effort.
A Community Effort, Year-Round
Through the Westside Volunteer Corps, volunteers from every background — residents, corporate partners, students, and community members — come together to support the historic Westside’s continued growth.
Across the year, that work takes many forms:
- Community clean-ups that restore and beautify shared spaces
- School and youth programming that supports the next generation
- Senior-focused activities that strengthen connection across generations
- Special events that bring neighbors together
Whether it’s clearing overgrowth, running a field day, or joining a Day of Service, each contribution adds up. Volunteers work side-by-side with residents, and that shared effort is part of what makes this community’s story a shared one.
To everyone who has volunteered with us — once, occasionally, or dozens of times — thank you. Your commitment reflects a belief that community matters and that change is possible when people show up for one another. That’s the spirit that keeps this work going.
Looking Ahead: There’s a Place for You Here
If you’ve been looking for a way to get involved, there’s no better time. Opportunities are happening right now — and in the weeks ahead — to step in and be part of the historic Westside’s continued growth.
This spring, volunteers are supporting Earth Day efforts through neighborhood clean-ups and beautification projects. Others are joining recurring monthly clean-ups that help care for the neighborhoods week after week.
Days of Service continue to bring residents and volunteers together for hands-on impact — from refreshing public spaces to supporting community-centered initiatives. And for those who want to engage more deeply with the broader vision, the Transform Westside Summit is an opportunity to connect with the work in a different, equally meaningful way.
As the year continues, opportunities expand — from park projects to youth and senior-focused programs that build connection across generations.
However you choose to get involved, your presence matters. View the full volunteer calendar and sign up here.
More Than a Moment
National Volunteer Month is also an invitation — to step into the work, meet your neighbors, and be part of something meaningful. Whatever your schedule, skill set, or experience level, there’s a place for you. Meaningful contributions don’t require expertise; they start with showing up.
Volunteerism isn’t just something we celebrate in April. It’s what sustains this work all year long. Every hour given and every connection made helps move the historic Westside forward — together.
